World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades increase the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as crit chance and PvE damage.

For instance an item with the upgrade template ending in % will gain 3damage to attack each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give an additional stat boost or effect when they're used. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be applied to equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to a blue level before a component can be used. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they can't be used multiple times or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a particular kind of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments can be recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade could include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for instancethe 'Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). The player can get the maximum of five boost upgrades at a time. Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-tier version of the item will be available during the next reset. Glyphs

After you have acquired the desired Glyphs you will require them to be placed on your equipment. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or purchased from some NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe completed yields a certain number of Technology points. These points can be used to upgrade the item. Once enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and its additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an item is upgraded by a player to a higher level, the original item is replaced with a different item of the same type. The same armor will be upgraded to an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own set bonus. This could be a drawback in that it could cause the item to become more expensive, even if you don't require it.

The upgrades to items can be rerolled, if the player has enough tokens to be able to do so. This causes the item to be traded for a new one, with an initial level and a totally different set of extra bonuses. This is useful for certain items, but it shouldn't be done regularly, as it could waste many resources.

Certain upgrades can be rerolled many times, increasing their value and allowing the player to customize their equipment. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, as it gives buffs when the player is repeatedly in or leaves the water. The item can be upgraded several times, increasing the maximum roll every time by 10 increments. This item is highly useful in PvP. A well-rolled version could be worth up to 50x the value of a non-upgraded counterpart.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to boost the level of their available equipment--armor, weapons, and trinkets above ilvl 385--by offering the appropriate items and currency to an NPC that upgrades items. Upgrades to armor set pieces increase its base defense and weapon upgrades items boost their base damage as well as the required strength and dexterity.

All items can be upgraded up to five times, with the exception for hero equipment, which is able to be upgraded eight times. Every each time you upgrade an item it has an opportunity to fail. The rate of failure increases as you exceed the maximum number of upgrades. Failures will result in the item reverting to its original state which means that the player has to purchase more materials than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is dependent on its rarity score and the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium items is equal to the base value of the upgrade. For instance, a typical equipment item might have 5 upgrades with a cost of 25600 Technology Points 4x Quality Improvement Opportunity. Hero grade items have a lower cost per upgrade.

Premium items could have different upgrade requirements from regular gear. For example they might require less sowels, however they may require more minerals and orons.
