Saab Key Replacement

Having your car keys stolen or lost could be extremely annoying. It's cheap and easy to purchase a new car key if there is an extra key.

Saab owners are advised to always have a spare key because it's easier to replace a lost or stolen one. If you've lost your only key, it's an issue because it's costly to get one and requires a dealer to install and program a brand new TWICE module (Column Integration Module for earlier automobiles) and a brand new key that is OEM (not from Amazon or eBay).

If you're having problems with your remote control keys not locking or unlocking your car, you should check for several possible causes. Most likely is the battery for the coin on the key fob. However, it can be caused by damaged buttons and Saab key programmer water damage, signal interference, and issues with the receiver module.

If you've checked these and your problem persists it is possible to resolve it yourself by changing the code in the key. This is done by changing (in reverse Hex) the number count to zero in the ECU. To do this you need access to the case of your car key fob. The easiest way to do this is to remove the emergency key from the fob. You can then use a flathead to remove the fob's case to expose the battery. Be careful when opening the case and make sure you don't pour any liquids inside the fob since they could damage the electronic components inside.

Every Saab since 1995 is required to have an immobilizer in the vehicle. This makes it almost impossible to steal your car without a key. The dealer must replace both the CIM (Column Integration module) or TWICE, based on the model. They will also have to program the key to work with the new module. Claimed-new key from aftermarket sellers typically are not properly initialized and therefore cannot be programmed correctly when you are in need of one.

It is not uncommon for the battery to wear out in a keyfob over some time of use particularly if the fob is frequently used to lock and unlock the car. Fortunately replacing the battery on the majority of SAAB 9-3 key fob models is easy and doesn't require any special tools.
