Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a nationwide shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing issues and a growing global demand.

Our service is able to offer private ADHD titration as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of a single prescription.

Titration

A highly experienced consultant psychiatrist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your ADHD. This includes a medical history and an assessment using the typical ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.

After your examination You will be advised that medication may be beneficial for your particular situation. This will be discussed during your follow-up appointment (which may be scheduled in person, by video link or by phone). Your physician will go over the various options for medications available. If you decide to start medication, we can help you the option of titrating your dose to ensure the best balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This process can take a few weeks and involves gradually adjusting your child's dosage until the appropriate balance has been achieved. It's not uncommon to to titrate up to three different medicines before you find the one that is most suitable for your child's ADHD. It's important for parents to take part in this process of titration adhd medications, and keep an eye on their child's behavior to let the doctor know if the medicine is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be given as a prescription from a private pharmacy that you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fees). You will be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication, which includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

Once the assessment has been completed, you'll be able to schedule follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist as necessary. Usually the appointment will take place on zoom video call however in some instances it is possible to have an audio-only consultation (again at an extra cost).

At this point, we will discuss treatment options and decide on a custom-made ADHD medication titration plan. This will include a review of your medication dosage and a discussion of any possible side effects you might be experiencing. The cost of these titration consultations is PS150 for face-to face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. The cost of medication is additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will also ask you about your family history and the impact that your ADHD symptoms can have on your life, including any issues with relationships you may be experiencing or other mental health problems that you may be suffering from. This is because ADHD is an inheritable condition, and it is crucial to look into any family history that might indicate whether you are at risk of developing the disorder.

During the assessment, it is essential that you are truthful and open with the doctor who will be using the information you provide to determine if you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a vital part of the process, adult since a failure to do so could result in an incorrect diagnosis, and thus an incorrect prescribing of medication.

We recommend that if you are unsure about your preferences, you speak with your GP prior to booking your private assessment. Some providers have different policies regarding whether or not they require a GP letter. We also advise that you check whether your GP accepts a "Shared Care Agreement that means that after you have been discharged from the clinic you will be referred back to them steps for titration the prescription for the medication.

Medication

For many people who want a private diagnosis of ADHD, medication is a key element of their treatment. It can be difficult to get prescriptions from psychiatrists on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs can be reluctant to refer patients on to specialist services.

Inquiring your GP to refer through Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). This means you can select a provider that offers an assessment and titration service. This can reduce your wait time significantly and is more convenient if you are working and have a hectic schedule.

After you have been diagnosed, your doctor will examine your condition to determine if you need medication adjustment. You will be asked to fill out forms that are different for each provider, but the most common ones are self-report forms and medical histories from childhood and adulthood. These forms will allow your doctor to determine if there are any circumstances that indicate you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication, even when they've been prescribed.

If you are titrated, the medication will consist of stimulants and nonstimulant medications. These will be thoroughly tested and monitored to find the right combination for you. The titration procedure can be lengthy and may require multiple appointments before you are stable.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will be contingent on the type and amount of medication that you are taking. They can be monthly or quarterly. This will involve your clinician checking to see if you are stable on the medication, logging any side effects you have had and making any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain in a safe dosage. You'll also have to attend a routine health check, which could include blood pressure, pulse and weight readings and an annual check-up.

Some people might be satisfied with their medication, and therefore do not have to discuss their titration process further. If you need to discuss your titration or treatment plan more thoroughly, it is possible that you'll be referred back to the private clinic who performed your initial assessment. In this scenario the titration is included in the consultation fee. The medication will be provided through the private prescription. This could cost more than an NHS prescription because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
