How to Replace window pane Window Panes

It's a task you can take on yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. You'll need only the proper tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old broken, deteriorating or damaged, replacing them with newer glass that is tempered or insulated can increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while maintaining the historical integrity of older homes. The replacement of the window pane is easy and can be accomplished by most homeowners who possess basic hand tools. You will also need an additional window pane, glazier's suggestions, pliers, and latex glaze putty. If needed you may use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Wear safety glasses and gloves prior to starting. Working with broken glass can cause serious injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is best to use pliers however, a flathead may be used as well. Use a wood chisel, or putty knife to get rid of any old putty that remains around the frame and the window sash. Be careful to not scratch the window sash. Work slowly and carefully. This should be done on a ladder, not the ground. Also, have someone below the sash hold it steady.

After you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. Measure the width and height of the opening in the sash by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and Replace window Pane contraction). These measurements can be taken to a home center or hardware store to get an item cut from stock glass to the right size. You can cut the glass yourself if you have the right tools.

After installing the new glass Apply some caulking to the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then, push it into the rabbets, where the glass will rest. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If you need to you want to tap your glass lightly into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack, you can cover it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk before pressing it into the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you'll need to apply putty to keep water from getting in. After the putty has dried remove the oily film off the glass and let it dry completely before painting. Paint after the putty has completely dried. It won't make a strong seal and could leak or discolor with time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, you may be worried about the cost of replacing it. It's true that replacing a single pane of glass doesn't need to be costly when you do it on your own. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of what it would cost a professional.

If you're working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely attached to the frame. This job is relatively easy and fast using the proper tools and replace Window pane techniques.

When you are ready to start taking down the old window pane. Remove the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it.
