Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique key case to celebrate the brand's centenary. Made of Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set of keys as well as a brochure with never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre images.

Aesthetics

Bentley is a brand that takes its aesthetics seriously. It is evident in the precise position of its quilting, the choice of leather sourced from by-products of cattle production, the wood from sustainably managed forests and the creative patterns on its levers. The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top vehicle. Its rear tonneau, for example, showcased the biggest piece of book-matched, dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to an actual production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

It is this unique design, attention to detail and craftsmanship to detail that has established Bentley as the world's most sought-after car brand. The firm continues to push the boundaries with the latest technology and craft, including the introduction of an instrument cluster that is digital with an electric tilt-opening back glass sunroof, an artisan-made docking station for Apple iPads, and electrochromic smart glass that can be changed from opaque to transparent with the push of the button.

A century since its founding, Bentley - now under sole Volkswagen ownership after years of conflict with BMW and BMW - celebrated its centennial in 2019. Before the pandemic planning took center stage, the marque held a series of special events and launches planned to celebrate this significant occasion.

Design

Bentley is a luxury car maker that makes ostentatious and luxurious cars. However, even the keys are an oath. The Mulsanne has twin turbocharged 6.75 litre W12 engine that generates 560bhp and 479lb-ft of torque. This prodigious power is enhanced by a new suspension architecture that delivers Bentley's signature hushed ride.

In celebration of its Centenary, Bentley introduced a custom-designed specification called the Centenary Specification for vehicles built in 2019. The cabin features cross-stitching and contrast stitching in Centenary Gold throughout. The bentley valet key Wings on the headrests and seats are embossed in Centenary Gold, adding to the sense of celebration. A custom Bentley key case is also included in the Centenary Specification, making the Bentley experience all-inclusive.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne key has buttons that open the trunk and a second button that can start the car. It also has a switch that can switch on the parking break. There is a knob that can fold and unfold the mirrors while parking in tight spaces. Using this feature can aid in getting in and out of the car more easily.

Each key master Bentley takes about two days to make. It is hand cut to shape, sewn sealed and polished to provide the highest-quality finish. It is lightweight and durable and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar to that of the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key, but it feels much heavier and has a luxurious feel.

It is also equipped with Secure-A-Key which prevents theft of keys without keypads. This device is inserted inside the remote control key fob and is turned off after a few minutes of inactivity, preventing thieves from transmitting the frequency of the key to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley's distinctive design reflects the company's values of excellence in craftsmanship, engineering expertise, and cutting-edge technology. Over 4,000 people work at its Crewe headquarters, and are responsible for the development, design and production of Bentley automobiles. These workers use techniques passed through generations and apply them to cutting-edge automotive technology. This is British manufacturing at its finest.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division lets customers design their car. The "mood station" lets guests pick images that inspire them. They can range from picturesque vistas to sporting events. Each time a selection is made the pattern that emerges shows the model of the Bentley, as well as the color and style preferences for the customized Bentley.

The resulting configuration is saved to individual R.F.I.D.-enabled keys that are then presented to the guests in a custom key case. Keys can also be outfitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps, which illuminate the door-opening path with the owner's name or emblem when they make their way towards the vehicle.

Bentley estimates that it takes around 500 man hours to design and assemble the average Mulsanne. The refusal to embrace new technology is the key to this time-consuming effort. Instead of using a machine to space the perfectly matched cross-stitched leather seats, workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Drivers must park their vehicles manually, rather than relying on the built-in sensors to direct them to perpendicular and parallel spaces.

Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities in an exclusive Mulsanne W.O. Edition, which pays tribute to William Osler, the founder of Bentley. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays tribute to the founding father of the brand, William Osler Bentley. The limited edition cars include a key master bentley that displays the 1930 8 Litre crankshaft.
