Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A lightweight double pushchair is easy to move around, especially if you have children of various ages. They are easy to fold, steer and carry up and down stairs.

The majority of light double pushchairs we tested are side-by-side designs and they're generally best for kids who can sit up on their own since these models tend to be lacking car seat integration. If you're looking for a compact and lightweight double, you can try the egg2 which folds down to the size of a tiny suitcase. It can be used as a double or a single by adding 2 baby car seats or carrycots. Our home testers were amazed by how easy it was to maneuver even with a full load of kids.

Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't foolproof however -when your children are at the same age or stage, they may still fight over who rides in which seat. If they're at different heights, a tandem style may be ideal for them as it allows them to face each other.

Tandem

While side-by-side models are best double stroller for children of the same age group, tandem light double strollers have distinct appeals. They can take a bigger car seat, and some even have seats that can be reversible or a carrycot in the middle. They are generally more spacious and easy to access and exit from however their baskets are usually smaller than the ones on single buggies. They often have larger canopy, peekaboo windows and even padded leg cushions.

One of the most impressive things about it is its one-handed fold - although it does require practice, Kirstie in our Lab has said it's "genius". The carrycot can't be folded when it is attached. However, the mechanism to attach and remove the carrycot is easy and quick.

Tandem strollers are light and lightweight. They generally have a more precise turning compared to side-by-side models. However, they could be harder to drive on uneven surfaces and curbs. They may also be a little slower to accelerate and may be heavier to move, which could cause strain on your back.

A convertible double buggy is a different option. It's initially one but you can also add adapters to convert it into a double. It could have a second seat, carrycot or both in front. Or the children can sit together. Some of them also have the option of adding buggy boards that could help an older child keep up with younger siblings.
