Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums and was a more ferocious, constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and embarked on a world tour to support the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
